Process Steps for Making Terracotta Pot

At Shunfa clay pot factory, we place great emphasis on the craftsmanship of terracotta pot making, ensuring that every terracotta product meets quality standards.

We adopt advanced tunnel kiln firing technology and are equipped with an intelligent temperature control detection center, which can effectively manage the entire firing process with precision and ensure efficiency. The specific terracotta jar making process is as follows:

Natural High-Quality Clay

Clay, as a raw material for  terracotta jar processing, has a direct impact on the quality of  terracotta jars. Choosing high-quality natural clay is one of the process features in  terracotta pot making. Shunfa clay is sourced from a specific natural mining area and undergoes rigorous composition analysis and fine processing to ensure the quality of the pottery jar craftsmanship.

The clay used to make terracotta pots must undergo strict composition analysis and screening to ensure that the comprehensive composition meets the requirements of plasticity standards and can effectively ensure the progressiveness and quality of terracotta pot making process. The use make a pot with clay has the following characteristics:

● Ecological safety, natural without chemical additives
● No risk of heavy metal precipitation, ensuring microbial activity in fermented foods
● Avoid anaerobic environments and inhibit the growth of miscellaneous bacteria
● Firing temperature>1300 ℃
● Has salt alkali corrosion resistance and is widely used in various scenarios

Refining Muds

Mud Refining Process

In the terracotta pot making process, natural clay is first refined using clay machines. Through raw material crushing, impurity removal, filtration, moisture adjustment, vacuum refining, and aging, impurities and bubbles are eliminated. Water is added at the right time to turn the clay into a fine, uniform slurry, adjusting its viscosity and toughness. Clay colors vary by origin—reddish brown, earthy yellow, grayish white—laying a unique foundation for the final products.

Process Features:

● Homogenization

● Micro pore optimization

● Plasticity enhancement

● Chemical activation.

Forming Process Features

Terracotta pots can be shaped through manual molding, machine molding, rotary molding, or mold molding. We use the most advanced rolling forming method, which features gentle, uniform force, ensuring consistent embryo tissue structure from small to large parts. Moreover, the large contact area between the rolling head and embryo mud creates high pressure with longer compression time, ultimately maximizing the embryo’s density and strength.

Advantages of Rolling Forming Process:

● Improve production efficiency

● Ensure uniform wall thickness and safer stacking

● Geometric accuracy of the inner wall ensures uniform distribution of bacterial communities

● The qualification rate is controlled at 98%

● Eliminate hidden microcracks, pass 50 freeze-thaw cycles at -25 ℃

Embryo Press Machine

Embryo Repair

Embryo Repair

After the terracotta pot is formed, details need to be refined through the forming process. Skilled craftsmen manually repair blanks to improve the quality of details. This terracotta pot making process not only optimizes the appearance of the pottery jar, but also enhances its structural stability, laying the foundation for subsequent steps.

Clay Throwing Process Features :

● Artificial intervention for embryo defects
● Improve the overall quality of terracotta pot
● Inheritance of Pottery Culture
Tools used: bow shaped steel knife, deer skin scraper, sponge cone

Drying Process

Drying process features: is a process between firing and glazing. Glazing and sintering can only be carried out after the body is completely dry, otherwise the glaze surface is prone to cracking or peeling. The drying of the body is usually done by placing it in a cool and ventilated place to air dry naturally, which usually takes 7 days to ensure even dryness and wetness. This process is also an important step in the terracotta pot making process.

Quality indicators of drying process:

● Drying uniformity: moisture content ≤ 5%

● Dry stress index:<0.3MPa

● Cycle (large pottery jar): 5-7 days.

Glazing Process Features

Glazing Process Features:glazing is a key step in the terracotta pot making process, where glaze is a thin layer of colorless or colored glass covering the surface of the pottery jar product. terracotta jar glaze is made by grinding mineral raw materials (kaolin) into glaze slurry, applying it to the surface of the damaged body through an automatic oil spraying machine, and then calcining it at a certain temperature.

This glaze can enhance the organic strength, thermal stability, and dielectric strength of pottery jars. At the same time, it has aesthetic value, is easy to clean, and is not easily eroded by dust.

Performance of glazed terracotta jars:

● Anti permeability: 0 permeability, constant fermentation quality
● Acid corrosion resistance:<0.01g, suitable for industrial specific applications
● Surface hardness: up to Mohs 7 degrees, with a stacking damage rate of ↓ 90%
● Antibacterial glaze: Bacterial activity reaches 92%, fermentation efficiency increases by 30%
● Glazed frost resistance: -30 ℃ freeze-thaw cycle certification.

Firing Process Features

Firing process features:the finished glazed terracotta pots is placed in a tunnel kiln and fired into shape in a high temperature environment of 1100-1370 ℃. We adopt a continuous firing process to ensure efficient and stable production, while relying on a precision intelligent temperature control system to control temperature uniformity within ± 1370 ℃, effectively ensuring the quality of terracotta jars.

Performance Advantage:

● High density
● high strength
● High hardness
● Low water absorption rate
● High chemical stability
